Music tomorrow (Feb 13)

My Funny Valentine; Performed by Miles Davis, Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums).  Miles Davis recorded this (and played it live) many times. This recording is more traditional, if you go forward in time, its a more modal interpretation.

Paul Chambers is one of my favorite bassists. If you listen he always seems to play the right note, but if you transcribe what he is doing, it’s often NOT what all the textbooks say to do — in terms of the “rules” of jazz bass, his  note choices are often weird.

The song is  by Rogers and Hart from the musical Babes in Arms. Unfortunately the film dropped all the Rogers songs except for the title song.

The most famous recoding(s) of this song are probably by Chet Baker, and they are quite wonderful. Explore!
