I love all things Ivesian, but this piece is special — Charles Ives’ string quartet number 1. You have to think Charles Ives liked it too, having recycled the 1wst movement into his fourth symphony.
The 1st quartet is largely based on hymn tunes and fragments – can you identify them all? I’ve always thought that the piece would sound fantastic in an organ transcription or adaptation. I sometimes wonder if such a thing might have existed in the piles of Ives’ music that NYC’s First Presbyterian Church threw away.
